Review

Ahoy, folks! I’ve got an enthralling tale to share with ye about a movie that’s sure to keep ye on the edge of yer seats. ‘The Score,’ released in 2001, is a crime thriller directed by Frank Oz starring Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, Marlon Brando, and Angela Bassett. Set in Montreal, it’s a story of Nick Wells (De Niro) – an aging master thief who plans to retire – and his last heist with his young protégé Jackie Teller (Norton).

The plot kicks off with Nick living a peaceful life running his jazz club in New York City. He takes pride in his business that let him stay away from criminal activities for good. However, his friend Max (Brando), who runs a fence operation in Montreal, lures him into stealing an invaluable scepter from the Montreal Customs House.

Nick is hesitant to take on this difficult job. To begin with, he doesn’t want to break his promise to Diane (Bassett), his girlfriend-now-turned-business-associate who has invested her life savings into buying the jazz club. Besides, Nick’s operating style demands patience and precision which he finds lacking in Jackie.

Jackie has built his reputation as a street hustler and amateur thief but is desperate to prove himself worthy of Nick’s trust. The inexperienced Jackie puts Nick’s well-planned heist at risk by introducing another partner named Stevie (Jenna Rowlands) who complicates things further.

The film received critical acclaim with praise bestowed upon its direction, plot twists and performances of De Niro and Norton. Brando too was lavish in delivering some memorable lines – “There are two types of thieves in this world: The ones who steal to enrich their lives & those who steal simply because they cannot do anything else.”

The story is not only thrilling but also full of surprises and unexpected twists which will keep you hooked to the screen. The movie keeps you guessing till the very end, and the climax is nothing short of nail-biting.

The Score gives us a chance to see De Niro playing an unexpected role, much different from his usual strong-guy roles in previous films. He is vulnerable in this character, portraying Nick as exhausted looking for closure before settling down with Diane. Norton’s acting brilliance is at its peak in the film as he seamlessly slips into Jackie’s cocky personality.

The Score was also termed as Brando’s last acting project before he passed away later that year. His performance holds up today as one of his most memorable moments on screen.

The film was shot on location in Montreal, giving it a genuine feel and adding to the cinematography department’s immense applause. The movie showcases beautifully crafted scenes of Montreal architecture such as Notre-Dame Basilica and Old Montreal, taking viewers on a sightseeing tour of the city.

One highlight of The Score is its score composed by Howard Shore, which contributes to creating an overall sense of suspense throughout the film. The musical setup adds intensity to each scene, inviting viewers into this world of crime and plot twists.

However, despite all its merits, The Score received mixed reviews from critics. Some people felt that it was too conventional for a crime thriller and lacked depth; while others praised it for its clever plot twists and stellar performances.

Nevertheless, even though some may not have been completely taken with the film’s story or direction style, almost everyone agrees that it has some excellent craftsmanship throughout – from its acting talent to scriptwriting chops!

All in all ‘The Score’ is a classic that begs for repeated viewing showcasing talent both on and off screen making it a must-watch for all thriller lovers out there!
