I Know Why the Rise of the Footsoldier: Part II Sings

Maya Angelou’s words flowed as effortlessly as a river merging with the sea. Her command of language, ability to paint pictures and capture emotions through prose and poetry is legendary. She was a woman who had seen life from different angles, survived and thrived through myriad experiences. She embodied resilience, eloquence, passion and truth.

If Maya were still with us and had seen Rise of the Footsoldier: Part II, she would have had plenty to say. It is a movie that has all the elements of an engaging story – drama, action, violence, suspense and intrigue. However, it goes beyond that. The film has something to say about humanity, loyalty, ambition, greed, power and survival.

The movie is based on a true story about Carlton Leach (played by Ricci Harnett), a former football hooligan turned gangster in Essex County in England in the late 1980s and 1990s. In part one of the series released in 2007, we saw Carlton rise through the ranks of a local gang to become one of their leaders. He became involved in drug trafficking, protection racketeering and violence. It was a world where trust was scarce but codes were sacrosanct.

In part two which was released in 2015 directed by Ricci Harnett himself – Carlton finds himself at odds with his former friends who he feels betrayed him while he was incarcerated for several years for armed robbery. He also has to deal with rival gangs who are vying for control of lucrative drug markets while trying to keep his family safe.

The plot is gritty and raw – it shows how people can be sucked into criminal activities due to poverty or lack of opportunities or misguided loyalties only to find themselves trapped in an endless cycle of violence and danger.

The cast delivers exceptional performances that make the story come alive. Harnett himself is charismatic and menacing as Carlton. He portrays a man who is at once ruthless and vulnerable, loyal and duplicitous. Other actors such as Craig Fairbrass, Luke Mably, Steven Berkoff and Terry Stone also deliver nuanced portrayals of complex characters.

The history behind the movie is fascinating. The true events that inspired the story took place at a time when Essex was known as the “Essex Boys” era – a period of time when gang violence was rampant in the county. The main characters in the movie were real people who were involved in actual crimes such as drug trafficking and shootings.

The score for Rise of the Footsoldier: Part II is also noteworthy. It features songs from the 1980s and 1990s that evoke nostalgia for those who grew up during that period. The film’s soundtrack includes hits such as “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “Love Missile F1-11” by Sigue Sigue Sputnik, and “I Don’t Want a Lover” by Texas.

The cinematography is arresting – it captures the brutality of the world depicted in the movie using vivid visuals without being gratuitous or gory. It showcases Essex’s landscape beautifully while also revealing its underbelly.

Rise of the Footsoldier: Part II was well-received by audiences when it was released in 2015. It has since become a cult classic among fans of gangster movies due to its authenticity and uncompromising storytelling.

The film did not receive any major awards but that doesn’t diminish its value or impact. It was a low-budget indie production that went on to gross over $1 million dollars at the UK box office alone.

Critics were split on their opinion about Rise of Footsoldier: Part II with some praising its gritty realism while others found it too violent or lacked a moral compass. However, the overall consensus was that it was a well-made movie that delivered on its promise of being an intense and thought-provoking thriller.

The production and development of the film were also impressive. Ricci Harnett not only directed the film but he also wrote the screenplay, produced, acted in it and composed the soundtrack. It’s rare for one person to have such a big role in a movie’s production but Harnett showed his versatility and creativity.

The editing and special effects were also noteworthy. The fight scenes were choreographed realistically without being over-the-top. The use of practical effects such as squibs and blood packets added to the authenticity of the violent scenes.

The dialogue between characters was authentic – filled with British slang and banter that made them feel like real people instead of mere caricatures.

In conclusion, Rise of the Footsoldier: Part II is an engaging and creative movie that tells an important story about human nature, loyalty, greed, power, and survival. The cast delivers stellar performances while the cinematography captures Essex’s landscape beautifully. The history behind the movie adds depth to its plot while its soundtrack adds nostalgia for those who grew up during that era. Despite receiving mixed responses from critics, it went on to become a cult classic among fans of gangster movies due to its authenticity and uncompromising storytelling.
