Review
It was the year 2011 when the audience witnessed a new take on a typical Indian love story with Anand L Rai’s “Tanu Weds Manu.” The movie, which revolved around two polar-opposite individuals getting hitched, garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. After four years, Rai brought back the same cast in a sequel titled “Tanu Weds Manu: Returns,” which again turned out to be an exhilarating affair.
The storyline catches up after four years of Tanu and Manu’s marriage, which seems to be dwindling through various marital issues. The charming R Madhavan once again plays the role of Manoj Sharma aka ‘Manu,’ who is struggling through his depressing marriage life. Kangana Ranaut, who earned immense praise for her portrayal of Tanuja ‘Tanu’ Trivedi in the first part, comes back with her impeccable acting skills to essay dual roles- Tanuja from London and Kusum from Haryana.
The film opens with Manu’s arrival at a mental hospital as he suffers severe depression and anxiety. While in India, his parents seek help from astrologer Dubey Ji (played by Zeeshan Ayyub), who suggests that he should get married again if he wants to overcome his affliction. Following this advice, Manu meets Kusum aka Datto while visiting Delhi University and falls for her simplicity.
Meanwhile, Tanuja is seen living an extravagant life in London and is facing a divorce battle with Manoj. She decides to come back to India after a failed attempt at patching things up with her husband. Upon returning, she learns about Manoj’s marriage proposal to Datto and feels jealous. Thus begins Tanuja’s struggle to win back her husband at all costs.
The plot further thickens as both women meet each other during Holi festivities in Kanpur. The director tactfully manages both Ranaut’s characters and delivers an engaging narration, leading to a gripping climax.
Apart from the lead duo, “Tanu Weds Manu: Returns” has an excellent supporting cast that includes Pappi Ji (Deepak Dobriyal), Jassi (Eijaz Khan) and Payal (Swara Bhaskar), who added humour and warmth to the film.
The movie boasts of delightful music by Krsna Solo and Tanishk Bagchi, with songs like “Banno tera swagger” and “Ghani bawri” becoming instant chartbusters. The lyrics, composed by Raj Shekhar, add depth to the emotions portrayed by the characters on-screen.
The production design by Anand L Rai stays authentic throughout the film, capturing the essence of small-town India. The cinematography by Chirantan Das highlights the beauty of rural Haryana and Delhi’s lively streets in his camera frames. The dialogues penned by Himanshu Sharma are witty and relatable, ensuring a few laughs now and then.
The movie won several awards for its excellent performance at various award functions such as Filmfare Awards, Zee Cine Awards including Best Actress for Kangana Ranaut.
In conclusion, “Tanu Weds Manu: Returns” is a perfect blend of love, emotions, humour and drama with brilliant performances from everyone involved. Rai’s direction ensures an engaging screenplay which captures every aspect of human emotions quite well. With its successful box office run and critical acclaim, this movie is undoubtedly one of the best sequels in Bollywood history.
