Review

Have you ever seen a giant lizard and a giant moth have an intergalactic battle? If not, then “Invasion of Astro-Monster” is the movie for you. Released in 1965, this Japanese science fiction film directed by Ishiro Honda is an experience that every moviegoer should enjoy. The film follows astronauts Glenn (Nick Adams) and Fuji (Akira Takarada) as they travel to Planet X to investigate its habitability for human life.

Upon their arrival, they are greeted by the inhabitants of Planet X who ask for their help in defeating a mysterious monster known as Monster Zero. The two astronauts agree to help but later discover that the inhabitants of Planet X have an ulterior motive – they want to kidnap Godzilla and Rodan, earth’s most famous monsters to defeat Monster Zero.

The storyline might seem simple, but the way it’s executed will leave you at the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie. In true Dan Ariely style, I must say that “Invasion of Astro-Monster” is a perfect balance between storytelling and action sequences.

One standout fact about this movie is its release date in Japan. It was released on December 19th, 1965 – which happens to be Godzilla’s birthday! The producers perfectly timed the release with this tidbit of information making it a fan favorite immediately.

The cast delivered excellent performances with Nick Adams being a standout performer as Glenn. He was praised for his believable acting performance despite starring alongside monsters and aliens.

The film also features Akira Kubo, who would go on to play leading roles in other classic Toho productions such as “Destroy All Monsters” and “King Kong Escapes.” However, it’s fair to say that both actors shared their screen time with amazing special effects.

The practical effects and miniatures make every scene look like something out of a comic book or graphic novel series. The sets are elaborate and the props were top-notch for the time period. It’s a testament to the creativity of Ishiro Honda in breathing life into this movie’s universe.

The music, composed by Akira Ifukube, is a standout as well. His masterpiece score blended perfectly with each scene’s mood, making the audience feel every high and every low. From thrilling action sequences to emotional moments, Ifukube’s music helped elevate each character moment.

Despite being over 55 years old, “Invasion of Astro-Monster” remains popular among Godzilla fans worldwide. The movie’s incredible special effects and memorable characters ensure its place in not only Toho and Godzilla history but cinematic history as well.

This movie has also had success influencing other films such as “Pacific Rim,” which pays homage to the original Japanese Kaiju Cinema style in which “Invasion of Astro-Monster” belongs.

However, like most movies, there are some criticisms of this classic film. Some have suggested that it could have been shorter in length but I think that would have left out crucial character development scenes that make you care about what happens next.

The production value is impressive for a movie made in 1965 but it’s not perfect. Some scenes lacked proper lighting or camera angles, leaving some moments underwhelming and choppy – this was mostly remedied by Honda’s balancing act between story depth and action-filled sequences throughout the movie.

Overall, “Invasion of Astro-Monster” is an excellent sci-fi adventure film that any fan of monster movies should watch at least once. The iconic duo scene between Godzilla and Rodan facing Monster Zero completes what is a masterful final act that leaves a lasting impact on audiences young and old alike.

So grab your popcorn or some Japanese snack treats with your friends and family because In Dan Ariely style: This classic kaiju movie will give you cinematic thrills like nothing else out there and make you wonder why we can’t have giant monsters in real life.
