Director Lewis Milestone gives us an intimate look into the lives of soldiers fighting in the trenches of France and their experiences and struggles during this historical period. Starring Lew Ayres, Louis Wolheim, and Slim Summerville, this film remains a poignant portrayal of war long after its release in 1930.
Adapted from Erich Maria Remarque’s novel of the same name, “All Quiet on the Western Front” follows young German soldier Paul Baumer (played by Ayres) as he joins his classmates to fight for his country. However, what they find is not glory but instead death and destruction as they are caught up in some of the most intense battles seen during World War I.
The storyline is truly gripping as we see young men transformed into hardened soldiers through their experiences on the front lines.
