Why “Monstrous” is a Surprisingly Touching Movie with a Powerful Message About Love and Forgiveness
As a behavioral economist who studies human irrationality, I’m often skeptical of horror movies. They tend to exploit our fears and biases, using jump scares, gore, and stereotypes to manipulate our emotions and beliefs. However, every now and then, a horror movie surprises me with its depth, complexity, and humanity. “Monstrous” is such a movie.
Directed by Bruce Wemple and written by Anna Shields (who also stars as the main character), “Monstrous” tells the story of a young woman named Sylvia who embarks on a road trip with a mysterious man named Alex to find her missing friend. Along the way, they encounter strange occurrences and dangerous locals in rural New York. As their journey unfolds, we learn more about their pasts and secrets, as well as the hidden monsters that lurk inside them.
One of the strengths of “Monstrous” is its ability to balance suspense and character development. While there are some scary moments in the movie (especially near the end), they are not gratuitous or excessive. Again, without giving away too much, I can say that the movie challenges our assumptions about revenge and justice as well as our ability to forgive ourselves and others for past mistakes or harm. It asks us to consider what makes us human, what connects us to others despite our flaws, what gives us hope when all seems lost. As a behavioral economist who studies moral decision-making myself, I found some dialogues in “Monstrous” to be very thought-provoking.
Overall, I think “Monstrous” is an engaging and creative movie that deserves more attention than it has received so far. While it may not appeal to everyone’s taste (especially those who prefer more action-oriented or polished horror movies), it offers a unique and thoughtful perspective on the genre. It has some flaws, of course (such as occasional pacing issues or exposition-heavy scenes), but they are minor compared to the strengths I listed above.
If you’re in the mood for a horror movie that goes beyond jump scares and gore, that explores complex characters and relationships, that challenges your assumptions and emotions, then “Monstrous” is worth a watch. It may surprise you with its tenderness and depth, and it may leave you pondering its message long after the credits roll.
