Review
Ladies and gentlefolk, come hither and hear the tale of Mary. A movie so grand, it will make thine heart race and emotions soar. The plot is akin to the master wordsmith, William Shakespeare himself. It tells of a queen who lost her throne and power, but never her dignity and soul.
The movie travels back to the sixteenth century, where Queen Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) returns to Scotland after the death of her husband in France to rule her kingdom once more. However, England’s Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie) also holds claim to the Scottish throne. Thus ensues a battle between these two queens as they fight endlessly for their right to power.
The storyline may be well-known, but the director Josie Rourke brings forth a new perspective with brilliant cinematography that transports us back in time with ease. It is a beautiful portrayal of how women can lead powerfully despite societal norms that dictate otherwise.
The cast is one of the most promising groups of actors from this generation. Ronan does justice to Mary Stuart’s character by showcasing her determination and vulnerability with aplomb. Robbie plays Elizabeth with a mix of arrogance and insecurity that makes us both despise and empathize with her.
Let us not forget about Jack Lowden’s portrayal of Lord Darnley, Mary’s second husband who was both a lover and traitor. His role was played exceptionally well, manipulating Mary for his own gain before his end came.
It is inspiring to see how this legendary story has been adapted for modern audiences. Though much has changed since Shakespeare’s era, human nature remains constant throughout time.
The dialogue in this movie is impeccable; every sentence delivers poetic prose that could rival any sonnet from yesteryear. One particular quote said by Saoirse Ronan depicts Mary’s resilience even through adversity:
“I may have lost my throne but I still have my soul.”
Indeed, this simple conviction resonates deeply with us today.
The movie’s score by composer Max Richter complements the period piece with perfect orchestral harmony. The music enhances the dramatic scenes and adds emotional depth to every moment.
As for filming, the Scottish landscapes are enchanting, and the historical sites are breathtaking. The crew did an excellent job capturing Elizabethan England and Scotland’s natural beauty.
The popularity of Mary has only grown since its debut in 2018. It has gained critical acclaim across the board, including Academy Award nominations for costumes and makeup. It is no wonder that Mary has become a favorite among history buffs and movie enthusiasts alike.
Gossip has it that there were creative differences between director Josie Rourke and the studio during production. However, one cannot deny the final product’s quality, which surpasses any minor disagreement.
There are many memorable scenes throughout Mary; one that stands out is when Mary meets Elizabeth for the first time. Their interaction is intense and unforgettable.
The soundtracks are also well-curated from contemporary musicians like David Bowie to classical pieces that fit perfectly with Shakespearean era films.
What makes Mary special is how it depicts strong women who struggled in a male-dominated society. The themes of love, betrayal, power struggles mixed with war and politics resonate even today in modern times.
As much as we enjoy this movie, there still lies some criticism about how it portrays history inaccurately here and there. Some experts argue that certain aspects could have been researched better – still more nitpicks if you ask me!
Overall, the production team behind Mary deserves immense praise for bringing forth this masterpiece on screen. The directing was superb, acting was flawless and costumes were a league of their own.
In conclusion, I urge thee to watch Mary if you haven’t already! It will transport you back in time to experience an unforgettable tale of two queens’ struggle for power. You will leave satisfied and mesmerized by this epic movie that pays homage to one of the greatest playwrights in history, William Shakespeare. Bravo, Mary!
