Review
The sun beat down upon the harsh terrain as I made my way into the cinema to watch “End of Sentence.” The movie had piqued my interest, not only for its storyline but also for its connection to one of the most celebrated authors in history – Ernest Hemingway.
Directed by Elfar Adalsteins and written by Michael Armbruster, “End of Sentence” tells the tale of a father and son on a journey to fulfill their late wife/mother’s final wishes. The father, Frank Fogle (John Hawkes), is a reserved and stoic man who has just been released from jail after serving a sentence for white-collar crime. The son, Sean Fogle (Logan Lerman), is estranged from his father and has a restless spirit that takes him around the world.
Together, they embark on a road trip across Ireland to scatter their wife/mother’s ashes at her favorite spot. Along the way, they meet various characters, including Jewel (Sarah Bolger), who leads them to discover more about themselves and their relationship.
The plot itself is not groundbreaking, but it is executed with such authenticity and depth that it filled me with a sense of longing and introspection. It reminded me of Hemingway’s style – raw and stripped-down prose that captivates you with its simplicity.
The cinematography was also exceptional – capturing the vivid landscapes of Ireland in stark contrast to Frank’s inner turmoil. Even the score was poignant – elevating each scene without overpowering it.
The acting was superb all around – John Hawkes conveyed Frank’s pain and regret with subtle nuances while Logan Lerman brought charm and vulnerability to Sean’s character. Sarah Bolger was remarkable as Jewel, who provided much-needed levity in otherwise solemn moments.
Even though “End of Sentence” did not receive much attention during its release in 2019, it received critical acclaim at various film festivals and deservedly so. It was a testament to the power of storytelling and how it can transcend language, culture, and time.
As the credits rolled, I couldn’t help but think of one of Hemingway’s famous quotes – “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.” The journey of Frank and Sean Fogle showed that sometimes, healing requires us to confront our past head-on, no matter how painful it may be.
If you’re looking for a movie that tugs at your heartstrings without being melodramatic, “End of Sentence” might be just what you need. Its understated yet powerful message will leave an indelible mark on your soul long after you leave the cinema.
