In true Hemingway fashion, “Bel Ami” is a film that delves deep into the complexities of human nature and our unrelenting desire for power.
Set in 19th century Paris, the film follows the story of Georges Duroy (played by Robert Pattinson), a young and ambitious man who climbs his way up the social ladder by seducing powerful women and manipulating those around him. With his good looks and charm, Georges quickly gains the favor of wealthy men such as Charles Forestier (played by Philip Glenister) and Rousset (played by Colm Meaney), using them to further his own ambitions.
The storyline is inspired by Guy de Maupassant’s novel of the same name, which was written in 1885. The movie adaptation was directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod. The script was written by Rachel Bennette.
As Georges’ power grows, he becomes increasingly ruthless, even going so far as to betray those who helped him along the way. However, despite his despicable actions, we cannot help but be drawn to his character – a testament to Pattinson’s impeccable acting.
