Review
In fair Hollywood, where we lay our scene,
The 50/50 movie now takes the lead,
A tale of one man’s journey, so serene,
Facing his fears, uncertain what fate may feed.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a fine young man,
Plays Adam Lerner, whom we follow through,
His life is changing fast, faster than he can,
With a cancer diagnosis – it’s all new.
Seth Rogen plays Kyle, his best friend and mate,
As funny as ever in this role he takes,
He’s there to make Adam laugh and never late,
To cheer him up whenever his heart breaks.
The storyline is touching, oh so real,
We can’t help but relate to Adam’s plight,
As we witness how his fate will deal
With every moment that comes in his sight.
The plot unfolds with great complexity
As Adam grapples with his illness’ toll
But with some help from friends and family
He finds a way to cope and fill his soul.
Anjelica Huston plays Adam’s mother well
Showing raw emotion that cuts to the quick
Her love for him is powerful you can tell
Her acting skills are nothing short of slick.
The cast works well together on this set
Bringing their A-game one and all
Their chemistry makes the movie bet-
Ter than many others that do enthrall.
We hear from Anna Kendrick playing Katherine McKay
A therapist who helps guide our hero along the way
Her lines are quick and precise like an expert fay-
Re who sees through falsehoods without delay.
“Life is fragile,” she says at one point in time.
“Everyone falls apart sometimes.”
It’s true, though it may seem like a tired old rhyme-
It hits home when you see the film unfold those chimes.
Jonah Hill plays Greg, another friend of note-
Who works at a radio station so deftly
Always ready with a quip or a funny anecdote
He’s essential to the movie’s flow throughout it deftly.
The story is based on Will Reiser’s own life,
Who fought cancer with humor sharp as a knife.
And in the hands of director Jonathan Levine,
The movie shines, bringing Reiser’s story to life serene.
The score by Michael Giacchino is moving and reflective-
Adding depth and layers to the film’s emotive directive.
As we see Adam face his fears and try to cope
We feel our hearts soar with him, reaching for some hope.
The filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia,
Capturing scenes just right that left no room for ridicule.
And it all comes together seamlessly
Creating a film that grabs and entertains effortlessly.
It was met with critical praise upon its release
In 2011, earning great reviews and quick peace-
Of mind from viewers worldwide enthralled
By its message of hope after situations appalled.
It garnered several accolades and nominations,
Including nods for Levitt, Rogen, Kendrick, Huston-
And rightly so because they all did shine,
Making the movie worth every penny of its time.
50/50 is a beautiful film that stays with you long after credits roll
Lingering in your heart like a sweet memory or a precious goal.
It may make you cry, but it will also make you laugh,
Leaving you feeling grateful for every single moment that makes your heart half.
